Compost Tumbler or Compost Bin – Which Is Better?

Before making compost, you first have to consider, which is going to be best tool for the job. This revolves around two options, either a compost bin or a compost tumbler. There’s a lot of information on the internet relating to this topic and many debates as to which is the most efficient and easiest to use. It is also likely someone you know has already got one and will direct you into buying whichever one they have purchased. Before you do make a decision, please consider the following factors; this should make things a little easier for you when making your choice.

Compost bins are probably the most popular, but they can create more manual labour, as making compost requires churning in order to help aerate the mix and promote the process of organic breakdown. If you have a busy lifestyle and do not have time to get dirty with your pitchfork, then perhaps this isn’t the option for you. However, you might enjoy this process. Many compost bin users out there find it very stress relieving.

If you’re anything like me and you have a hectic lifestyle, then the compost tumbler is going to be the better option, although they can be slightly more expensive but well worth the money. There is no churning required, which is less messy. All you have to do is rotate the drum a few times. Based on the design of the most common tumblers, turning the drum is so easy, even my two year boy can do it.

Whether it’s the compost bin or the compost tumbler you prefer, another added benefit is those made of recycled plastic. Composting is all about recycling anyway isn’t it and what better way to further help the environment. A great property of recycled plastic is the fact that it will last you for years as it’s virtually immune to erosion, unlike wood of course which can rot very easily. Obviously this will eventually lead onto you having to purchase another one to replace it. Kedel.co.uk offer a recycled plastic rotating tumbler that holds up to 220 litres, a nice amount of compost can be created in just four to five weeks as a result.
