Going Green? Start Vermicomposting With Your Own Composter Plans

Enlist the help of some unusual ‘employees’ who can perform a service called vermicomposting. The little red wiggler earth worms are one of the single best resources of compost by eating and processing organic waste. Its great! No benefits, vacation pay and since they are doing what they love to do they never call is sick either. You can get started with your own vermicomposting system quite simply with the following directions and composter plans.

Vermicomposting starts quite easily with a bin where you can consolidate your compost. In this bin you can include some dirt, coffee grounds are great, any organic waste like fruit cores or peels, a little dirt and a splash of water and you’re good to go. Wait, don’t forget the red worms. Now, given the nature of the contents you may want to find a location outside when it’s warm weather. In cooler conditions the garage, carport or outdoor shed will work effectively.

Start the process by burying the food scraps just below the surface of the soil; this will enable the worms to get to work. The red worms need access to the food waste and they do NOT like light so to bury them a bit will make sure they can get to work. Once the worms begin, they consume and process the food waste and in turn they will provide worm castings. This will give you rich soil that you can use in your gardens.

If your bin has a system where you can drain off the excess water you can use as a topical treatment to mist plants via a spray bottle. This rich water is referred to as ‘worm tea’ and has the benefit of being packed with nutrients that are excellent for the growth of your plants.

As the worms multiply you have the option of dividing the content of your composter bin and creating a second, third or more compost bin to house the mixture or increase the size of the bin. The reason behind this is the need for the worms to move and work. If they can’t do their jobs then the food waste in the bin will simply rot if they cannot ‘process’. Eventually your bin will end up as decay and the worms will be killed off.

Vermicomposting is a simple system and very effective at not only recycling your organic waste but you gain some nutrient plentiful soil. Cheap hardworking labor from the red worms will keep this little factory flowing with rich soil week after week. So get your composter plans build your bin and start hiring!
