Green Gift Ideas for Father’s Day

With Father’s Day just around the corner, it’s time to make plans for the traditions that make the day memorable: breakfast in bed, homemade cards and crafts, and possibly a little indulgence for that special dad. This year consider going green with a gift that will resonate with the lifestyle and interests of the fathers on your list. From AusPen non-toxic markers to food shares at a local organic farm to eco-friendly diaper bags, this list is sure to give you ideas on how to give to dad without forgetting about Mother Earth.

For the culinary type: Treat dad with some organic coffee beans and a ceramic or porcelain thermal travel mug to call his own. For a special evening out, consider going to a restaurant that features organic foods or follows the 100 mile diet. For a longer-lasting meal, buy shares with a community supported agriculture (CSA) group for locally-grown veggies and fruit.

For the hard-working type: Get the fathers on your list their own AusPen non-toxic dry-erase marker kits for the office or classroom. They’ll love having their own set of markers that are refillable and made of recycled aluminum and that cut down on waste and toxic marker fumes.

For the gardening type: Try a compost bin, or embellishments for an outdoor space, such as an ornament, garden statue or wind chimes. If you have a green thumb, plant some herbs, flowers, shrubs or a tree in dad’s garden. If he loves enviro-gadgets, he will certainly appreciate a garden hose spray nozzle that uses an LCD display to monitor outdoor water use. No garden at home? Think about donating toward the protection of land and animals with an agency like the Nature Conservancy or World Wildlife Fund.

For the dad-on-the-go type: Pamper dad with new eco-friendly threads or totes. Send him on his way in style with a bamboo briefcase, organic outdoor wear from outlets like Patagonia, or Rovia shoes made of 100% leather from free range, expired Ethiopian cows and goats. Don’t forget the new dads and soon-to-be dads on your list. Most baby boutiques will stock masculine-looking diaper and messenger bags made of recycled rubber or organic cotton.

No matter which green gifts you choose, the fathers you are honoring will certainly appreciate the eco-values you are supporting, especially if the gift is topped off with a personal touch such as photos, sincere words and some quality time. If it’s the thought that counts, going green for Father’s Day conveys that extra measure thoughtfulness.
