How to get started in Organic Rose Gardening

Growing roses organically is becoming more and more popular amongst rose enthusiasts.  Roses and Rose gardens have been grown by people for many thousands of years prior to synthetic chemicals  ever being invented. These chemicals don’t need to be depended upon to have a beautiful roses garden.  If you use organic methods and turn your yard an organic yard you’re able to lengthen the life of your roses.  Another benefit is keeping your family, house pets, and the local wildlife safe from possible harmful chemicals.

The earth, the plants, and the animals have been around for a very long time and surviving on their own without the help of man.  It is when man starts thinking he can do better then mother nature when things start getting out of balance.  Plants normally absorb water and nutrients from the soil through their roots.  The leaves of the plant have a process called photosynthesis, this is the process of turning water and sunlight to make energy.

Naturally, soil contains different bacteria, fungus, worms and other organisms.  These organisms help in the cycle of life to breakdown dead material such as leaves, wood and other things and this enriches the soil.  Chemical fertilizers and pesticides destroy the balance of natural soil organisms and disrupt the relationship between the rose plant and the soil.

Without the helpful bacteria and other organisms in the soil to protect the rose plants roots, other harmful things such as fungus and root rot can invade, harm and kill the plant.  Believe it or not it is possible to get your rose plants addicted to these chemical fertilizers. The more you use chemical based fertilizers to feed your roses the more the roses will need these chemicals. If you do organic rose gardening you will never have this problem.

Growing roses organically is not expensive and fairly easy, just leave out purchasing chemical fertilizers and pesticides.  You will still be able to feed the soil and care for your roses without these things.  Some soils might need a tiny bit of help but that too is easily done.  The best way to start is to work organic compost into the soil if it’s a new garden, if it’s an established garden then a top dressing of mulch to the top soil will start the process.

You can also start your own compost pile in your yard. Start by making a small pile of dirt and then adding plant clippings, animal wastes, grass clippings from the lawn, old dried leaves, and kitchen table scraps. Stuff like fruit peels, fish heads and egg shells are great things to add to this pile and then allow it all to decompose over time. There are several other easy ways to create a compost pile such as in a container. Doing it in a container or in a pile will get the same results but either of these ways require you to stir the pile to ensure that all of the compost is decaying properly.

Organic gardening also means not using most types of chemical pest control.  But, it doesn’t mean you are totally helpless against pests. Many times the pesticides you would use to kill the insects that are doing damage to your plants, will also kill the insects that help your plants.  Lady bugs and some wasps are beneficial for managing some insect pests. Birds and skunks will eat grubs, and snakes, frogs, and lizards also help to prevent pest problems.

If a pesticide is really needed, rose plant owners can get organic or natural pesticides from garden shops that are just as effective and are less harmful or toxic to the environment. Not to mention they can target a specific problem or type of pest insect. They can be very specific.

The goal here in organic rose gardening is to grow the largest blooms, that are the most fragrant, and are the most beautiful roses around in the neighborhood. This can be organically accomplished with just as much time and effort into your garden as you would put money into the chemical fertilizers and pesticides.
