Problem with climbing roses?

Question by GERALD G: Problem with climbing roses?
I have 4 4year old Sombreil climbing roses. By the end of the growing season, I always have 3-5 canes over 7 ft. tall on the trelles with no flowers. Each following year, there is no new growth on these long canes, and I’m forced to cut them back, only to have this happen again the following year. What if anything am I doing wrong. I am in zone 5, and mulch the plant leaving the canes up on the trelles over winter.

If the canes are woody [ look like wood] then cut them off down at the base. They won’t grow anything on them. Have you furtilized them yet? Roses like to be ‘fed’ every month or so. You shouldn’t cut back the canes that are green because climbing roses are roses that don’t need any cutting back except for the woody canes. This rose might take longer to show off so just be patient and keep furtilizing and make sure they get water. Roses love water but they don’t like to be drowned in it.Meaning don’t water every day. Just remember the fertilizer and they will soon be doing great. I use to put epsom salts as fertilizer sometimes and the roses loved it.
