Question by elisabeths mom: should I cut my rose bush down to the canes?
My best performing floribunda rose suddenly has a terrible case of black spot (we had a wet spring). It has spread slightly to the other roses so I pruned them back. The canes are affected as well. I think I should cut it down to the canes like I do in November but is that too drastic?

Cut off the spent flowers and cut back the canes only to where they are the diameter of a lead pencil and then go to a nursery and buy a fungicide that is labeled for black spot. Do not cut as severely as you would in the winter. Each variety of rose varies in its resistance to black spot.
